Jason and I have batted ideas back and forth for a few years now,
mostly in a haphazard way, about how to establish a functional business
that would support us. Now with the budding (its a small bud to
be sure, but still there) success of Alleged Enterprises I am spending
more time dwelling on the topic. Still a haphazard endeavor even
in my own mind but the math is very simple.
What service or
product can I provide to the world at large that would cause 1000
people to pay me $50 in profits each year. For simplicty of math,
lets make it 1200 people. That means that I need to find
something that would cause 100 people each month to give me $50.
Figuring 20 work days in a month (roughly) that means that each day I
would need 5 people to pay.
Conversely, I could try to find 50
people who felt that my services were worth $1200 a year. This is
perhaps a bit more plausible, but it would depend on the service I
suppose. In this argument I need to find a service that is worth
$100 a month to 50 clients.
Only question now is, what is
the service? This is the point at which I fall down. But
one of these days when I am awake at 1AM on a Thursday for no reason,
it will come to me in a blinding flash. So far the only idea I
have had that seems even remotely practical is to offer computer help
to home users who need a combination of training and support.
Just have to find a way to package it correctly.
Budding success indeed
Oh yeah, Alleged Enterprises is going to let me retire from my day job real soon. *cough*
It’s
no surprise to you that I believe that this is exactly the right way to
be looking at things. Perhaps we should do what we keep threatening,
and combine our efforts. With my training background and your technical
skills, we would be perfectly positioned to….
Hm. That’s where the wheels fall off for me, too.
